Homeowners across Tacoma call us when they need a new fence that holds up to Pacific Northwest weather without draining the budget. Chain link fence installation is one of the most requested projects we handle in the Tacoma area, and for good reason. It is durable, it keeps dogs and kids contained, and it does not require the upkeep that a wood fence demands every few years.

We are Goodrow’s Fence & Deck, and if you are looking for a trusted fence company in Tacoma, WA, you have landed in the right place. We have worked in Tacoma and the surrounding Pierce County community since 2006. That is nearly two decades of installations, repairs, and a whole lot of muddy job sites in the rain. This page covers what Tacoma homeowners and businesses should know before choosing chain link for their property, along with how our installation process works from start to finish.

Local Fit

Why Tacoma Properties Choose Chain Link

Tacoma has a wide mix of housing, from small lots close to downtown to larger yards out toward South Tacoma and the edges of the city. Chain link fits a lot of these situations well because it does not block sunlight or airflow, and it keeps sight lines open between neighbors. That matters on tighter lots where a solid wood fence would make a yard feel closed in.

A lot of the calls we get come from a handful of common needs. A family with dogs wants a secure yard without spending on a taller privacy fence. A business owner wants a fence line around a lot or storage area that discourages foot traffic without looking like a barrier. A homeowner replacing an old, leaning fence just wants the new one installed the first time correctly, set at the proper depth so it stays straight through Tacoma’s wet winters.

Compare Materials

Chain Link Compared to
Other Fencing Options

Chain link is not the only option, and we tell customers that upfront during the estimate. Wood fencing gives more privacy and a classic look, but it needs regular staining or sealing to hold up in this climate. Vinyl fencing holds its color and needs almost no maintenance, but it costs more upfront and offers fewer style choices than cedar fencing. Chain link sits at a different point on that scale. It is the most budget-friendly of the three, and it is the easiest to maintain over the life of the fence, but it trades privacy for visibility and lower cost.

For many Tacoma properties, the right answer is not choosing one material for the whole property. Some homeowners install chain link along a side or back section where visibility is fine, then add a section of wood or vinyl closer to a patio or front entry where privacy matters more.

Materials We Use

Materials We Use

We install both standard galvanized chain link fabric and powder-coated chain link for homeowners who want a cleaner finished look. Powder-coated fencing holds up just as well against Tacoma’s rain and moisture, and it gives the fence line a more finished appearance that blends with the house and landscaping instead of standing out as a plain gray grid. We also offer different fabric gauges depending on whether the fence is for a residential yard or a commercial property that needs a heavier-duty enclosure.

Our Process

How We Handle a
Tacoma Chain Link Project

Tacoma lots can have specific setback and permit rules depending on the neighborhood, so we check those requirements with the city or Pierce County before any post goes into the ground. Every project starts with a visit to the property, where we walk the yard with the homeowner, confirm the property lines, and talk through where gates need to go for people, vehicles, or both.

Once the layout is set, our team digs post holes for the corners, ends, and gate posts first, since these carry the most weight once the fabric is stretched tight. Each post is set to the proper depth for this region’s soil and weather, with extra concrete at the corners and gate openings for long-term stability.

After the posts cure, we install the top rail, stretch and attach the chain link fabric, and finish with a bottom wire to keep the fence line straight and close to the ground. Gates are hung last and checked to make sure they open and close without dragging.
