Every project starts with a site walk. We run a string line along the property lines to confirm the fence layout before any digging begins, and we check with the local building department on permit requirements for the height and location the customer wants. Pierce County permit rules vary by jurisdiction, so this step gets confirmed before work starts, not after.
From there, our crew sets terminal posts first, since they anchor the corners, the end post, and both gate posts. We dig each post hole with a power auger or a post hole digger, depending on soil conditions, and we set posts below the frost line, which in this region typically means digging to about one third of the post length below ground, plus a couple of inches of extra depth for stability. Terminal posts and corner posts get set deeper and with more concrete mix than the line posts along the rest of the fence.
Once the concrete has time to cure, we install the top rail connecting each post, then attach the chain link fabric using a fence puller and come along to get proper tension across the entire fence line. Tie wires and aluminum fence ties secure the fabric to the line posts, while tension bands and a tension bar anchor the fabric to each terminal post. A bottom tension wire keeps the fabric taut and close to ground level, which helps with small pets and keeps the fence line looking straight over time. We finish each post with post caps or loop caps to protect against water.
Gates are built and hung last. We use a proper rail end cup and brace band setup on the gate frame so the gate swings freely and closes securely, and we install latch hardware sized for the gate’s use, whether that is a walk gate or a wider drive gate. On vinyl-coated chain link, we double-check for any exposed cut ends and touch up with matching spray paint if needed for a clean finish.
